The perpetual challenge for board members is adding value while staying focused on the three areas of governance - fiduciary, strategic, and generative. Judith Schechtman will tell us about the developmental stages of boards and schools connected with the division of labor between trustees and the school administration. The boundary between operations -- the head's side of the house - and good governance practice is somewhat permeable and fluid, with some areas of shared decision making. Discussion will focus on when boards must step across the boundary and how to step back again. Using real case studies as a vehicle to explore good practice and problematic board behavior, we'll look at the risks for the school when trustees miscalculate what is needed.
