Lower School Counselor

Dawson, a K-12 independent school of 520 students located east of Boulder on a beautiful 107-acre campus, seeks an exceptional Lower School Counselor for the 2022-2023 school year, starting August 1, 2022. Previous school counseling experience and a graduate degree is preferred. Professional Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in counseling preferred

  • LCSW/LPC licensure.

  • 3+ years counseling experience with K-5 students, or equivalent

  • Knowledge of child welfare mandates, including reporting and follow up procedures

  • Demonstrated classroom management skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • An attitude that exemplifies teamwork and personal responsibility

  • Maintain strict confidentiality in all matters

  • Previous experience working with children experiencing anxiety, stress, and trauma.

Responsibilities:

  • Report to Director of Lower School

  • Teach one 45-minute guidance lesson per week in all Lower School grades (8 in total), using a Social Emotional Learning Curriculum (Dawson currently uses the PATHS curriculum)

  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions to Lower School students

  • Participate in class trips, clubs, or Winterim expeditions

  • Respond to student crises during the school day

  • Collaborate with the Counseling Team and Lower School Student Support Team on all student matters.

  • Work with teachers to develop emotional support plans as necessary and help teachers identify strategies and supports for students and families in need

  • Remain current with research in areas related to school counseling

  • Additional duties as deemed necessary by the School


The salary range for this position is $40,000-70,000. Compensation is commensurate with experience, relevant skills, and hours worked. Benefits include Medical, Dental, 401k, and generous time-off.
