Middle School Student Support 2020-2021

August 10, 2020 - August 9, 2021

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that students with learning differences (Learning support in Language Arts and Mathematics) are identified effectively through appropriate diagnostic and formative assessment and observation procedures and are referred for support according to the ISD System of Referral

  • Plan and follow appropriate programs of intervention for individuals and groups of students as determined by their learning needs and differences

  • Establish coherent partnerships with subject teachers and specialists, acting in an advisory capacity or co-teaching as appropriate so that they feel supported when implementing the program of support.

  • Coordinate and develop Individual Learning Plans for students in conjunction with class/subject teachers and parents and students as appropriate

  • Support and guide any 1:1 assistants for learning support working within the school in conjunction with the appropriate class and subject teachers

  • Participate in Student Support Team meetings to discuss individual students and their needs

  • Monitor and evaluate the progress of LS students using the screener and organizing Student counsel Meeting if needed. 

  • Maintain and update the Learning Support Plan and Registers  .

  • Assess and report upon student progress according to ISD agreements

  • Facilitate and promote positive relations between home and school

  • Liaise closely with other members of Student Support Services – Learning Support teachers, Target Language Support teachers, Gifted and Talented/ Enrichment staff and Counselor.

  • Liaise regularly with the Principal and Counselor to ensure sharing of relevant information and work collaboratively as necessary in direct intervention with students.

  • Liaise with Subjects Lead as appropriate

  • Liaise with outside agencies as necessary

  • Share in the overall responsibility for the academic progress, personal development, health and safety, discipline and well-being of all students

  • This individual may be responsible for teaching a small number of classes

  • Any other reasonable duties, as directed by the school administration.



  • Qualifications/experience in Learning Support/Special Needs (ESL knowledge an advantage).

  • Well versed in best practices and methodologies for assisting students with learning differences.

  • Knowledgeable regarding best practices and knowledgeable regarding the developmental needs of Middle School students.

  • Knowledgeable regarding the developmental needs of students with learning differences.

  • Knowledgeable regarding the particular cognitive, social and emotional characteristics and needs of gifted/ highly achieving students

  • Working knowledge of language immersion programming.

  • Willingness to learn specifics about the national curriculum systems and pedagogical approaches of the French, Spanish and Mandarin programs and how this may impact students with learning differences.

  • Technologically able.

  • Willing to work as part of a team.

  • Self-directed, student-centered educator.

  • Cross-cultural exposure and understanding.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.


Physical Demands:

  • Regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee may occasionally be required to bend, stoop or kneel.
