5-8th Grade Learning Specialist

January 4, 2021 - June 1, 2021

Mackintosh Academy - Boulder, a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in grades K through 8th, is seeking a full time 5-8th Grade Learning Specialist for the second half of the 2020 – 2021 academic year. Mackintosh Academy presents an exceptional opportunity to work with bright, dedicated, and creative students and colleagues in a highly innovative and naturally beautiful setting. 

The primary goal of the Learning Specialist will be to ensure that Mackintosh Academy – Boulder appropriately identifies and supports students who may have additional learning needs that require an extra level of support. This person will provide supports and interventions as needed to individual students and groups of students based on developmentally appropriate and research based practices. This person will also support the school's faculty to equip them in supporting the needs of various learners. The Learning Specialist will interface with faculty, parents, and independent contractors on behalf of students who require specialized academic instruction (including advanced learners). 

Position includes, but may not be limited to: 

  • Lead the process for identifying, monitoring, and remediating individual student learning needs in conjunction with homeroom teachers, families, outside providers, and/or administrators. 
  • Completing student observations or assessments as needed or when requested by homeroom teachers or other concerned parties for the purpose of evaluating targeted learning needs and creating plans of support. 
  • Work with teachers, families, and outside supports to make and/or facilitate and track plans to support identified student needs. 
  • Meet with individuals and/or small groups of students (primarily 5-8th) for academic support and intervention in all areas of learning including: literacy, math, etc. 
  • Support students with the development of executive functioning skills. 
  • Support 5-8th faculty with developmentally appropriate strategies and resources for meeting the needs of various learners who may be facing academic challenges. 
  • In conjunction with the homeroom teacher and/or administrators make appropriate recommendations for outside student support when needed. 
  • When outside testing is submitted to the school, support staff with implementing appropriate accommodations as appropriate to your role. 
  • Offer occasional faculty and parent educational programs or trainings as possible. 

 Credentials and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Masters preferred. Knowledge of gifted children a plus. 
  • Applicants must have a strong knowledge base in the area of learning differences, especially dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, as well as attention and executive functioning challenges. 
  • Desirable candidates will also know about intervention, assessments, and be current on the general teaching pedagogy of reading, writing, and mathematics.
