Language Arts Instructor - Elementary and Middle School

Works collaboratively and enthusiastically with a team of faculty colleagues, administrators, and parents to nurture children both inside and outside the classroom. Provides for the safety and well-being of all students at all times, models appropriate and ethical behavior, develops and teaches courses and curriculum, and assesses student learning. Through meetings, reports, and other vehicles, maintains communication with administrators, parents, and students. Supports the school community through academic and non-academic programs and activities and learns new skills on an ongoing basis.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

Classroom Teaching

  • Teach classes in Language Arts.
  • Exhibit mastery and enthusiasm for the assigned academic subjects and classes.
  • Plan and implement an appropriately focused and balanced curriculum for each student which adheres to the school’s curriculum and standards.
  • Prepare and develop activities, materials and lessons to meet the learning objectives (skills and content) of the curriculum and standards.
  • Develop and maintain a well-managed classroom where 100% of the students are engaged, consistently challenged, and supported. Classroom policies should be consistent with school policies.
  • Integrate technology into daily classroom teaching and student learning.
  • Decorate classrooms appropriately and to keep it neat and presentable.
  • Engage families in their children’s education and to communicate regularly and effectively with students and families.
  • Effectively utilize best practices in Teaching with Love & Logic, Inquiry Based Learning, and Readers & Writers Workshop.
  • Teach daily Leadership Class via the Aspen Youth Leadership Institute comprehensive and sequenced JK – 8th grade leadership curriculum.

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Assist in the on-going development of the department’s curriculum and core performance standards.
  • Provide weekly lesson plans for review by the Head of School.
  • To submit homework test/quiz/project assignments, graded student samples and grade book for review by the administration when requested.
  • Implement a variety of assessments that measure progress towards academic standards
  • Use assessment data to refine curriculum and instructional practices to help meet the school’s performance standards and expectations
  • Provide a written Personal Instruction Program and report card two times a year for each child.
  • Inform colleagues and the Head of School of any academic, behavioral or personal difficulties that arises with students.
  • Appropriately prepare students for testing and implement the school’s internal and external assessment program.

School Life

  • Reinforce the school’s core values and policies inside and outside the classroom.
  • Fulfill assigned monitoring duties (i.e. recess, lunch duty, etc.).
  • Share responsibilities for participating, organizing, and directing morning meetings, assemblies, student events, and school events.
  • Plan, prepare and lead club/athletic activities when requested.
  • Participate in professional development sessions.
  • Devote the necessary time and energy required to master the craft of teaching including being open to innovative approaches to teaching, feedback from colleagues and school administration.
  • Actively participate in the school’s professional development programs that may include creating a faculty portfolio, peer coaching, and attending conferences and workshops.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • To participate actively in the school’s faculty meetings, team meetings and department meetings.
  • To arrive at school by 8:00 a.m. for the morning planning and stay until 4:00 p.m. or until daily responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • To be punctual to all professional obligations.
  • To conduct oneself and dress in a professional manner.
  • To complete all other responsibilities deemed appropriate by the Head of School or Division Lead to help the school achieve its goals.
  • Manage budgeted dollars allocated to classroom expenditures via a Visa purchase card.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with individualized and differentiated instruction
  • Excellent organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with use of personal computer and educational technology
  • Demonstrate a relentless drive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of school
  • Model the school’s Core Values with colleagues, students, parents, and larger community

  • Grant permission for a credit check and criminal background check.

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate Degree or Graduate degree in Education or related to specific domain
  • 2+ years of experience as middle school lead classroom teacher
