POSITION DESCRIPTION

St. Anne’s Episcopal School is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time 5th-8th Grade French teacher.

WORLD LANGUAGE TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

We want our students to feel confident communicating in an all target-language classroom and to become lifelong language enthusiasts. To that end,  we strive to create a high-interest, supportive classroom environment in which students acquire the language as opposed to simply learning  about the language. We want students to take ownership, show their understanding, be curious and globally-minded about people and cultures, and feel secure enough to take risks.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

First and foremost, the ideal candidate will have a passion and joy for working with 5th graders and middle school students. They will have native or near-native fluency in both French and English and have a background in language teaching and learning.  The teacher will create a positive learning environment and serve as a great role model and mentor for adolescent children.  The teacher will foster an exciting, dynamic, hands-on, and creative learning environment wherein the teaching of skills, and knowledge, and instilling a passion for French is critical.

This full-time position consists of teaching four classes (5th-8th Grade French), leading a middle school grade-level student advisory, and filling other supervisory duties.  Fifth-grade French is a cultural and linguistic exploration of French, French-speaking countries, and the value and importance of learning another language and culture. In 6th - 8th grade  classes  we practice acquisition-driven language instruction by providing comprehensible input and other language-rich experiences.

The Middle School French Teacher will work collaboratively with the other members of the World Language Department to develop the PS-8 curriculum.

  • Identify and/or develop resources to meet the needs of the students.

  • Able to instill an appreciation of French-speaking cultures and of diverse cultural perspectives.

  • Proficient in and able to incorporate various platforms that enhance language teaching and learning.

  • Be compassionate, kind, and love teaching/working with upper elementary  and middle school children.

  • Be willing to work in an interdisciplinary, cross-curricular, and collaborative environment.

  • Demonstrate flexibility, resilience, accountability, and humor.

  • Consistently seek excellence, feedback, and demonstrate a growth mindset.
