Position Title: One-on-One Aide for Autistic Student
Location: Evergreen Country Day School, Evergreen, Colorado
Reports To: Middle School Director, Cub Buenning
Hours: Full-time, 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Job Summary:

The One-on-One Aide for an Autistic Student provides individualized support to a student with autism in the classroom or other educational settings. The aide’s primary responsibility is to assist the student in accessing and engaging with the curriculum, ensuring a positive and supportive learning environment. The aide will work closely with teachers, school staff, and the student's family to implement Student Learning Plan (SLP) and any necessary behavior plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Individualized Support: Assist the student with daily classroom tasks, assignments, and activities, ensuring they can participate in learning opportunities at their own pace and ability level.
  • Behavioral Support: Help manage and de-escalate challenging behaviors using strategies from the student’s SLP, reinforcing positive behaviors and providing consistent and predictable support.
  • Communication Support: Support the student in using communication tools or systems (e.g., augmentative communication devices, sign language, visual schedules) as necessary to ensure their needs and desires are understood.
  • Academic Assistance: Support the student in understanding and completing academic assignments, including modifications or accommodations outlined in the SLP.
  • Monitoring and Documentation: Track and document the student’s progress, behavior, and challenges, providing reports to the family and relevant school personnel.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the student’s educational team, including the teachers, therapist, and school counselor, to provide a coordinated approach to the student’s education and support needs.
  • Safety and Supervision: Ensure the safety and well-being of the student at all times, both in and outside of the classroom, including during transitions, lunch, recess, and field trips.
  • Social Skills Development: Support the student in developing social skills, including appropriate interactions with peers and adults, under the guidance of the teacher or behavior specialist.
  • Implementation of SLP Goals: Help implement the student’s SLP goals and objectives, providing input for updates or adjustments as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma required; Associate’s degree or higher in special education, psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Experience working with children with autism or other special needs preferred. Experience in an educational setting is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to implement behavior management strategies.
    • Patience, empathy, and understanding of the unique needs of children with autism.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and assist students with mobility needs, as required.
  • Ability to sit on the floor or engage in physical activities with students.
  • Ability to manage emotional and physical needs of the student in a variety of settings (e.g., classrooms, playgrounds).

Working Conditions:

  • Work will be conducted in a classroom and school setting.
  • May require occasional outdoor activities (recess, field trips).
  • May include some after-school hours for meetings or training.
