Intro to Bixby Math

September 10, 2026

How does a school that doesn't uses tests or grades teach math — and how do you know it's working? It's a fair question, and one we love to answer in person.

When Bixby was founded over 55 years ago, two beliefs about math were baked into the school from the start: that understanding why something works matters more than getting the right answer, and that children think best when they're trusted rather than tested. Those beliefs haven't changed. How we bring them to life has evolved considerably — incorporating decades of research on how children develop mathematical understanding, and what great math teaching actually looks like in practice.
Part of what makes that possible is something unusual for an elementary school: dedicated math specialists who genuinely love math and know it deeply. Your child isn't learning math from a generalist juggling every subject. They're learning from a teacher for whom math is a passion — someone who stays current on best practice, knows the research, and can meet every child exactly where they are in a small group where every child's thinking is visible.

No grades. No racing through content. Just real mathematical understanding, built from the ground up by teachers who care about it as much as we want your child to.
