Position Overview

Intermediate and Advanced EE: Environmental education and field experiences are important components of the Logan educational philosophy focusing on geographic, cultural, and ecological literacies (or something that implies that the lessons can include culture, geography, place-based/place-conscious topics as well as just straight science). The Primary Environmental Education teacher works collaboratively with Lead Teachers (students ages 8-14  years old) to develop and implement a year-long class unit, typically with a strong environmental science connection, comprising a variety of lab-based classroom instruction and field experiences. These classroom instruction and field experiences are largely science-related. The EE teacher will lead extended classroom overnights ranging from 2 nights to 8 nights. 

Unit Trip Teacher: Unit field trips are important components of the Logan educational philosophy. Unit Trip Teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to provide hands-on, real-world experiences for each Logan student. 

EE Responsibilities 

  • Develop age-appropriate, science-related curricula and deliver instruction consistent with the school's mission and core values

  • Work collaboratively with Core teachers in support of the Class Unit.

  • Teach classroom lessons in support of the Class Unit.

  • Organize and lead or co-lead field trips.

  • Manage the budget for field trips and all overnight trips.

  • Manage and document student medications on extended trips, with advance parent communication as needed.

  • Attend mandatory training for child safety, universal precautions, medication delegation, CPR/First Aid, etc.

  • Drive a school-owned vehicle for field trips.

  • Participate in meetings as requested.

  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with families. 

  • Establish a website login and become familiar with the documents in the staff resources section of the Logan website, particularly the calendar function and the personnel policies, as these apply to all Logan staff.

  • Attend mandatory training, such as that for child safety, universal precautions, etc.

  • Communicate with core teachers regarding any concerns about a student, schedule changes, and other issues in which information will allow each teacher to meet the child's needs. 

  • Help manage the EE lab, equipment and teaching supplies.

  • Perform miscellaneous other duties as assigned by the Head of School. 

  • Attend monthly all-staff meetings, staff retreats, pre-service, and other required professional days.

Unit Trip Teacher Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of a Unit Trip Teacher are to develop curricula, research and arrange appropriate field trips for each student so that they can experience hands-on learning with a person or in an environment that relates directly to their unit of study. Along with these responsibilities, Unit Trip Teachers: 

  • Develop curricula and deliver instruction consistent with the school's mission and core values, standards of teaching excellence, and the aspirations of skillfulness detailed in the diversity & inclusion rubric.
  • Create relationships with experts in the community and keep and share with the school database with those contact names, numbers, and addresses. 

  • Schedule trips with children and coordinate those trips with teachers and parents

  • Communicate with parents, teachers, and staff about when a child is going on a trip, what they need for that trip, who they will be meeting with

  • Provide a safe environment for the child while outside of the school campus

  • Manage trip budgets

  • Manage student medications on trips 

  • Drive a school-owned vehicle  for field trip transportation

  • Participate in meetings as requested

  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with families.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a field related to environmental education

  • Experience teaching environmental education to students (3rd-8th grades)

  • Experience taking students (8-14 years) on field trips

  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail

  • Mac and/or Windows computer-literate

  • Familiarity with using Google Drive

  • Ability to drive a small (14-passenger) school bus and have a valid driver's license

  • Hold or be able to acquire medication delegation certification.

  • Hold or be able to acquire Wilderness First Responder & CPR certification

  • Undergo and pass a background check, DMV check, and drug screening test as requested..

Status & Supervision

The Primary Environmental Education/Unit Trip Teacher is a full-time, salaried, exempt position during the school year (August - June). Regular on-campus hours are 8 am-4 pm. This position reports to the Associate Head of School.

Compensation and Benefits

The Logan School offers a salary range between $48,000-$65,000. Salary consideration is given for seniority, merit, quality, education, and experience.
